HANDGUN QUALIFICATION

   


In all of our Permit to Carry and Defensive Firearms Classes, we recommend that anyone who has in the home or carries a handgun for self-defense should be: 

  • Maintaining their personal physical fitness. 
  • Practicing their defensive handgun shooting skills at least once a month with a minimum of 50 rounds.
  • Continuing their defensive firearms education & training / attending courses taught by certified instructors.
  • Qualifying annually on a Defensive Handgun Qualification Course administered by a certified instructor. 


To help our students achieve this we are offering a Handgun Qualification. We are extending this opportunity to any for law-abiding adult citizens as defined by applicable federal, state, or local laws, who are at least 18 years of age or older. 


Why do we make a recommendation to qualify annually? We making this recommendation based on South Dakota Law Enforcement Officers must qualify annually, and under LEOSA Retired Law Enforcement Officers are also required to qualify annually to carry concealed. See below:


What will take place during this Handgun Qualification?

  • Skills testing of the participants ability to demonstrate the basic rules of gun safety with their defensive handgun, during the qualification.
  •  Skills testing of the participants ability to shoot a minimum passing score  of 75% with their defensive handgun during this qualification.

Skills Testing:

  • The handgun qualification accuracy standard is a minimum of 75%.
  • Participants will be given three (3) opportunities to qualify during the scheduled event.
  • A participant who fails to qualify after three attempts is deemed to have failed the handgun qualification/skills testing.
  • They are eligible for to re-test after registering and paying to attend a future Open Enrollment Handgun Qualification Event.

What do participants receive for attending this event?

  • Participants who successfully qualify will be verbally notified on the day of the qualification if they passed or failed.
  • Participants will be emailed a PDF letter from Schlueter Firearms Instruction regarding their status of  passing or failing the qualification after the day of the event.





Participants can expect to take part in one of two types of qualification:


NON-HOLSTER HANDGUN QUALIFICATION: 

  • Non-qualified Holster Participants will not be allowed to utilize a holster during the qualification process - and will utilize the low ready position as their starting position. 



HOLSTER HANDGUN QUALIFICATION:

  • Qualified Holster Participants will be allowed to utilize an outside the waistband holster meeting our holster requirements. 



PARTICIPANTS WILL NEED TO HAVE:


HANDGUN: 

  • We recommend using a handgun appropriate for self-defense chambered in a minimum caliber of 9mm/.38 caliber.
  • ​We recommend using a full sized pistol  (e.g. Glock 17), compact pistol (e.g. Glock 19), or sub-compact pistol (e.g. Glock 26, or 43) chambered in minimum of 9mm/.38 caliber.
  • IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS IF YOUR HANDGUN IS ACCEPTABLE CONTACT THE INSTRUCTOR!
  • MAGAZINES – 2 MINIMUM
    • PARTICIPANTS WHO ARRIVE WITH ONLY 1 MAGAZINE WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE UNLESS:
      • THEY CAN OBTAIN ANOTHER MAGAZINE 
      • THEY CAN OBTAIN A REPLACEMENT HANDGUN WITH THE REQUIRED NUMBER OF MAGAZINES
      • PARTICIPANTS WHO CANNOT MEET THIS REQUIREMENT WILL NEED TO RESCHEDULE TO ANOTHER OPEN ENROLLMENT HANDGUN QUALIFICATION - RESCHEDULING FEES WILL APPLY.
