NRA BASIC PISTOL
The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting is intended for all individuals regardless of previous shooting experience or NRA-affiliation.
This course has two components:
- A self-study or “eLearning module” which is completed online in your own timeframe.
- A hands-on practical portion conducted in a classroom and shooting range with an Instructor.
The Blended training format provides students the flexibility to complete a significant portion of the course in an eLearning environment, prior to arriving for the classroom and range session with an NRA Certified Instructor.
The instructor will provide you with a Course Control Code and directions to complete the self-study portion of the course prior to class date. When you register for this blended course, you’ll create a unique username and password.
- Completion of the E-Learning portion is REQUIRED!
- Before your live fire training class date with your NRA Instructor.
- This will be verified.
- Students who have not completed their online E-Learning portion of this course may not be allowed to participate in the live fire portion of the class.

Course topics include: gun safety rules, proper operation of revolvers and semi-automatic pistols, ammunition knowledge and selection, pistol selection and storage, shooting fundamentals, pistol inspection and maintenance, marksmanship, and shooting range safety.
Additionally, students will complete live fire training and a nationally standardized shooting qualification while on the range with an NRA Certified Instructor. Students will take a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination and receive a course completion certificate bearing the signature of the NRA Secretary and your NRA Certified Instructor.
Students will need to have:
- HANDGUN –
- We recommend using a medium or full sized pistol (e.g. Glock 17) or compact (e.g. Glock 19) pistol, with the trigger guard intact.
- Chambered in .22 Long Rifle, 9mm, .38 Special, .40 S&W, .45ACP,
- If you have other caliber pistols you would like to use please contact the instructor if you have questions.
- No “Pocket Pistols” which are a very small handgun usually in .25, .32, or .380 calibers. Their small size and complexity will greatly increase the difficulty level of learning new techniques and could cause increased frustration on the part of the student.
- No single-action revolvers are allowed.
- No Derringers are allowed

- Spare Magazines or speed loaders recommended
- 100 rounds of ammunition (minimum of 50 rounds) new factory ammunition only - no reloads

- Preregistered for the Class & Paid
- Registered/paid students will be emailed the link and key code for the online E-learning portion with in 72 hours of registering for the class.
- Students will need to complete the online learning portion of the course prior to the selected live fire training date with an NRA Instructor

*Handgun rentals are available through Hunters Pointe Shooting Club - students will need to rent the handgun from Hunters Pointe Shooting Club if they do not have one to bring to class.
