NRA Defensive Pistol Class
This course is conducted as a NRA Defensive Pistol Class. This course will focus on the techniques needed to develop a defensive mindset. The goal of the course will be to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to carry and use a concealed pistol ethically, responsibly, and with confidence. As a result of participating in this course, the student will be able to explain and demonstrate the following: How to apply the NRA Rules for Safe Gun Handling when carrying a concealed firearm, basic principles of concealment, the difference between cover and concealment, drawing from the holster, levels of mental awareness, developing the proper mindset when using a pistol for personal protection, clearing common stoppages, use of pocket pistols, and more. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection Outside The Home handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure and the NRA Defensive Pistol certificate. This course is only conducted by NRA Certified Advanced Pistol Instructors.

- Firearms & Use of Force
- NRA Rules for Safe Gun Handling when carrying a concealed firearm.
- Basic principles of concealment.
- The difference between cover and concealment.
- Drawing from the holster & Re-holstering.
- Levels of mental awareness
- Developing the proper mindset when using a pistol for personal protection.
- Immediate action drills to clear common stoppages.
- Reloading under stress.
- Move off the line of attack and shoot.
- Live fire training –using a flash sight picture

NRA Defensive Pistol certificate of Completion is awarded to students who successfully complete this class.

STUDENTS WILL NEED TO HAVE:
HANDGUN:
- We recommend using a handgun appropriate for self-defense chambered in a minimum caliber of 9mm/.38 caliber.
- We recommend using a full sized pistol (e.g. Glock 17), compact pistol (e.g. Glock 19), or sub-compact pistol (e.g. Glock 26, or 43) chambered in minimum of 9mm/.38 caliber.
- We do not recommend the use of “Pocket Pistols” which are a very small handgun usually in .25, .32, or .380 calibers. Their small size and complexity will greatly increase the difficulty level of learning new techniques and could cause increased frustration on the part of the student..
- No Derringers are allowed.
- No single-action revolvers are allowed.
- The use of a .22 Long Rifle caliber pistols are not allowed in this class.
- No pistols are allowed in class that have known safety issues:
- Firing when dropped.
- Firing when the trigger is not being pulled.
- Firing while in a holster & the trigger is not being pulled.
- Not firing when the trigger is pulled.
- Or any other issue found later which would make a pistol or any handgun unsafe to use.

HOLSTER:
The approved method of carrying in a holster in one of our classes is with an outside the waist band belt mounted holster, this is required for any class where holsters are allowed. In our defensive firearms courses we have set up the criteria for approved holsters for the student’s safety

- Although the above styled holsters are not allowed for Schlueter Firearms Instruction courses we understand outside of our classes students may choose to use a variety of concealed carry methods. If your method of carry will eventually be one of the above, we can give you some advice on selecting a quality holster during class.
- BELT – QUALITY BELT, DESIGNED TO CARRY A HOLSTER AND FIREARM STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.
- CONCEALMENT GARMENT – OPTIONAL NOT REQUIRED BUTTON DOWN SHIRT OR OTHER LOOSE FITTING CLOTHING TO CONCEAL THE PISTOL.
